In the 1890s, when Swami Vivekananda was working day and night for the propagation of Vedanta abroad and for the future of India, the idea of publishing a magazine first occurred to him. He feels that it is possible to convey the message of the Ramakrishna Sangh to the common people through this magazine.
By 1894-1895, Swamiji had written to his gurus Swami Brahmananda and Swami Ramakrishnananda about starting a magazine – preferably bilingual – through which the message of Vedanta, the message of Sri Ramakrishna, and the encouragement to build a new India would be brought to the common people. India being a British colony at that time, it has nothing special to say about its backbone. This new magazine has to come forward to take that responsibility.
